About the Artists:
The expressive and energetic work of Kathy Sullivan has gained great exposure in recent years due in part to her passion for horses and her involvement with the race horse circuit. This passion for horses began at an early age in Chicago, IL. The greatest motivation for her equine work comes from the loss of her beloved Thorougbred who trained at Churchill Downs. A Kentucky resident, Kathy has spent endless hours at Churchill Downs and other racetracks studying the sport over the years.
Kathy's colorful body of work also includes her successful jockey series featuring distinctive silks.
Due to her family connection to the lowcountry, she has spent a great deal of time in the Charleston area and has developed a keen interest in expanding her portfolio to include her take on our abundant sea island wildlife and other furry and feathered creatures. Kathy successfully captures the humor and the heart of local favorites including pelicans, egrets, seagulls, crabs, and a wide variety of unforgettable canines.
In pursuit of a Master of Arts, Kathy studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the American Academy of Art, and the University of Louisville. Kathy continues to explore and improve her craft through pursuing education from the best facilities and educators. The Art Institute of Chicago awarded her the Recognition Merit Scholarship in 2007. Her main source of growth however comes from the mentorship of three contemporary masters: Susanna Coffey, Jane Rosen and Susan Howe. Through their guidance, Kathy strives to find the perfect balance between the rigidity of education and the spontaneity of pure expression. “It’s a difficult tightrope to walk but I’m dedicated to keeping the balance between these two polarities in my work. It’s what initially attracted people to my work and I don’t want to forget that.” Among her many awards and honors, she has been selected to be featured in the book, "American Art Collector" by Alcove Books, July 2006 and July 2009. You can also see her work on the commemorative 2006 Woodford Reserve derby bottle. Her paintings can be found in the corporate offices at Churchill Downs, the Humana Corporation, Freedom Hall, Frankfort Convention Center and in private collections throughout the United States.
