Paintings from Life - New Oils by Roberta Remy
Date:
5-2-2008
Description
Opening Reception , May 2, 2008, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Edward Dare Gallery, Gallery Row, 31 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401
The Edward Dare Gallery is proud to present new works in oil by Roberta Remy. Paintings from Life, will be featured during the French Quarter Gallery Association Artwalk, on May 2, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Remy will also be teaching a workshop on Painting the Figure at Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan’s Island the week prior to this show (April 28 – May 2).
“When planning this show for Edward Dare Gallery in Charleston, I wanted to include images with a lowcountry flavor. Although I was nowhere near SC, the local models that I selected to portray fishermen and flower ladies had the universal human qualities of being hard workers and creative spirits - the same qualities that I imagined for the portraits of the south that I wanted to paint. The model for the fisherman series, a retired sailor, explained to me a lot about working on and around the sea. So the props that arrived from the SC coast -- shrimp nets and oyster shells -- were helpful in creating these compositions, but the true source of inspiration was the common chord of the human spirit.”
“All my life I have found the study of people, their faces and hands fascinating. Wanting to paint them, to capture their character, personality and essence is actually what kept me in art school for so many years. I wanted the tools to represent the nobility and elegance I felt each person possessed. I studied everything about drawing, anatomy and painting techniques to display my models in the most magnificent way possible. While models are sitting for me, I talk to them a great deal -- this little glimpse into their souls somehow gets into my paintings. I love to paint people doing what they would do, working, resting, creating, or just being. When choosing my models, finding just the right person for the right life situation being portrayed is part of my creative process.”
A contemporary painter working in the realist tradition, Roberta Remy specializes in Still-Life, Interiors, Figure and Portrait oil paintings. "When I fell in love with painting, it was the Old Masters and the American Impressionists who inspired my artistic search. Their traditions and techniques are the standards that I have set for myself. “ Remy attended Parsons School of Design, School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League of New York where she studied painting with master painters Frank Mason, George Passantino, David Leffel, and Sherrie McGraw; and drawing and anatomy with Robert Beverly Hale. Many years of study with these renowned painters has been a major influence in perfecting this artist's impressive technique, style, and motivation; all of which have played a part in her success as a painter. Remy’s work has been included in numerous juried and invitational shows including the Salmagundi Club, OPA and the Albuquerque Museum and is held in corporate and private collections throughout the US, Brazil and Europe.
Previously a New York based illustrator, she now makes Santa Fe home base where she’s been expanding her teaching activities since 1995. She says “When I teach my students now, I remember the wonderful and generous instructors I’ve been fortunate to have. I try to follow that tradition and pass it on”
The public is cordially invited to meet Roberta at our opening reception, May 2, 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Edward Dare Gallery, located on Gallery Row at 31 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Visual Diaries - Ann Merrill &Leslie Pratt-Thomas
Date:
3-7-2008
Description

Travel Journals – Visual Diaries
Two Woman Show featuring Ann Lee Merrill and Leslie Pratt-Thomas

This March, Edward Dare Gallery located on Historic Broad Street’s Gallery Row in Charleston, SC will feature a globe spanning collection of works inspired by the extensive travels of painters Ann Lee Merrill and Leslie Pratt-Thomas. Europe, New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, Thailand and Africa are all captured in these visual diaries. Regular jaunts abroad have resulted in a constantly growing and evolving body of work for both artists. Don’t miss this opportunity to take home a lasting remembrance of your favorite corner of the world. This show will begin with an opening reception on Friday, March 7 from 5 – 8 pm during the FQGA artwalk and will close the end of March.

As with Ms. Pratt-Thomas, the lowcountry is Ms. Merrill’s home. Merrill has said, “…the people, the shores, the marshes, the reminders of historic struggles of the peninsula and surrounding areas, are all a part of me. I love the excitement of going over the bridges of Charleston, seeing the long vistas of horizontal bands of color, the thousands of greens, blues, golds and reds revealed as we travel in the low country. This landscape, ageless and ever new, where the big sky and the horizon seem to go on forever, is always so paintable.” Merrill and Pratt-Thomas will continue to travel and bring home their painted visual diaries of their journeys abroad, and you can rest assured that they when they bring these pieces home it will be to Charleston. The Edward Dare Gallery is located at 31 Broad St, Charleston, 843-853-5002. To preview this show log onto www.edwarddare.com

People, Places & Things, new oils by Rich Nelson
Date:
12-7-2007
Description
With his use of purposeful, strong and visible brushstrokes, there is a definite sense of the artist’s hand at work in the paintings of Rich Nelson, whether it is in the texture of an orange, the plump yet delicate, hands of a child or a fleeting moment captured in a landscape painted en plein aire . In his pieces you can almost taste the fruit, smell the salt air and feel the subjects breathe. We are proud to present Nelson’s latest work in this extraordinary offering of paintings of simply people, places and things.

Southern Light - Paint Out
Date:
5-28-2008
Description
<SUP>

After the success of last year's event, the 2008 Southern Light Plein Air Paintout will take place again this May in downtown Charleston, SC. The event will begin with the canvas stamping on Wed., May 28 and will end with the reception and silent auction at the Charleston Harbour Club on Sat., May 31 (with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Charleston County School of the Arts Music Program). One of the highlights of this Plein Air Paint Out is the honor of having nationally acclaimed plein air painter Tony Van Hasselt, aws as the juror for the painting exhibition.

This event is open to all artists and would be of interest to any outdoor painter who would enjoy spending a few days painting in beautiful Charleston, SC this May. The Spoleto Festival is still in full swing during this last week of May, so it's an extra special time to plan a visit to Charleston. For artists that live here, its a great time to be outdoors painting in downtown Charleston with all of the festival excitement in the air. Artists are invited to bring any available handouts, brochures, postcards etc that advertise their gallery affiliations and/or their personal studio information so that potential clients will know how to find them and their work after the event.

The Charleston County School of the Arts Band Program is nationally recognized as one of the nations outstanding high school bands. Despite their impressive record nationally as musicians and as a top 10 school in the state academically, this program is faced with finding ways to continue its proud tradition of excellence with ever decreasing funds. With a budget of over $60,000, less than $4,000 is provided by the School District ($44 per student per year). As a result, the burden of increased funding falls upon the families of these talented young men and women; who many times cannot meet this shortfall. Through the generosity of participating artists, galleries, sponsoring merchants, and patrons of the arts, hopefully a portion of this funding deficit can be met.

For more information about the Broad Street Merchants Association and Gallery Row, this event or to request a registration package, please contact Julie Sweat at the Edward Dare Gallery 843-853-5002, www.edwarddare.com .
</SUP>

Natural Rhythm, paintings by Michael Patterson
Date:
12-1-2007
Description

Join us at Sandpiper Gallery on Sat. Dec. 1 from 6 - 8 pm for our Holiday Celebration and opening reception for "Natural Rhythm", new paintings by artist Michael Patterson. Rendered in dramatic color with a nod to cubism, Patterson's work has a graphic energy created by a focus on the negative shapes formed by an object, repetition of these shapes and the lines created when color massses converge. The relationship of these shapes sets the rhythm for a piece and leads the viewers eye around the piece. These oils and watercolors of performing musicians, figures lounging on beaches or hovering on rainy city streets give a fresh face to the familiar, revealing the universality of everyday life.

BARK! Trees & Canines by Madeline Dukes
Date:
8-9-2008
Description

Madeline Dukes latest body of work featuring trees, cold noses and warm hearts will open at Sandpiper Gallery, 2019C Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island on Saturday Aug. 9, 2008. The opening reception for this solo show will be held from 5:30 to 8pm. BARK!, will feature depictions of ethereal trees in the coastal setting of the South Carolina lowcountry as well as paintings created as a tribute to man’s best friend. This series of dreamlike trees and endearing canines implore the viewer to enter the paintings and awaken their own memories – making the experience very personal as their own recollections become part of the painting.

Although Dukes completes most of her work within her studio, she does employ an interactive process of observation in nature to capture color, form, and most importantly light. A connection with the subject must happen either with a live model or in the outdoors where most of her paintings begin. Once this connection is made, she sketches, paints, photographs, and makes notes of her experiences. While some work is completed on location, she usually brings these observations into the “indoor” studio.

Working in oils and oil stick, Madeline Dukes’ paintings capture the energy of her subjects with strong brush work, the use of impasto and by layering, scratching and scraping the paint with palette knives adding visual depth to her work and a sculptural feeling to her paintings.

“My brush work ranges from thick to thin on any given painting and I will layer, scratch, scrape, and make marks to portray the energy of the subject. I also use various palette knives. I “construct” with the paint. I am fascinated by the movement between the subject and its environment and I want to communicate that as well as capture the personality of the subject, the day, and the light.”

A South Carolina native and John’s Island resident, Madeline Dukes studied studio art and political science at Winthrop University. Dukes’ work has been selected for several group and juried shows at museums and cultural centers in North and South Carolina, including the Spartanburg Museum of Art, Lincoln County Museum, Sumter Museum of Art, McElvey Center, Mooresville Art Center, Pickens County Museum, the Rauch Gallery at Gaston College, and a traveling show with the South Carolina State Museum.
For more information about Madeline Dukes and this upcoming show go to www.sandpipergallery.net or contact the gallery at 843-883-0200.
